Natural Nail Polish

Until I was pregnant, I never thought about non-toxic nail polish.  I read an article on using formaldehyde free nail polish while you are pregnant.  They recommended a brand called Zoya

Now I also want to use non- toxic nail polish because my daughter is old enough to want to
play dress up.  I don't want her using something that could be harmful.

Recently I found another non-toxic nail polish I want to try called Scotch Naturals

The company originally started with hopscothch kids natural nail polish that is safe to use.  Apparently moms started borrowing their daughter's nail polish so the company came up with a grown up version - the Scotch Naturals.

So many cool colors to choose from.   I guess it is time for a mani-pedi!

Pasadena Sidewalk Chalk Festival

Last year I was listening to the radio and heard about the Pasadena sidewalk chalk festival, but I was too busy that weekend and couldn't go.  I did call my friend Carmen who lives in Pasadena to tell her it was going on, but she was also busy that weekend.

Well this year Carmen called me to ask me and my daughter, Sandra to go see the festival with her.  So off we went to Pasadena!

The weather was perfect for being outside.  And it was fun to see all the artists out in the
Paseo Colorado shopping center.

This shopping center is unusual in that it has shops and restaurants on the ground level with apartments above them.

It was interesting to see the different subject matter that each artist chose to portray.

Sandra enjoying the festival.

Here is an artist's interpretation of Maurice Sendak's Where The Wild Things Are.  I wanted to see this one's completion, but Sandra started getting hungry so off we went for lunch.

After lunch we just had to go to our favorite cupcake place in Pasadena.  Dots! Yum!!

Sandra and I in front of Dots (Carmen is behind the camera).  We tried 6 different mini cupcakes.  Each one we tried was so delicious.  I liked the Dulce de Leche and the Coconut.  Sandra liked the Chocolate Mint and the Red Velvet.  My friend Carmen had the Carmelita flavor.

The Night Circus

This book has been popping up in my peripheral vision for the last couple of months, in blogs and magazines. I hadn't stopped to read about it.  I haven't had the time to read lately so I didn't pay attention.  I think the third mention of it in a magazine intrigued me enough to go get a copy at my local library.  By the first page I had already texted my sister telling her she absolutely had to get her hands on a copy of this book!

Once I started reading, I couldn't put it down.  Then I saw the publication date and was upset with myself for not reading it sooner.  It's been around for 2 years and I only just now heard of it!  I am seriously off my game.

The circus arrives without warning.
No announcements precede it, no paper notices on downtown posts and billboards, no mentions or advertisements in local newspapers.  It is simply there, when yesterday it was not.

And the black sign painted in white letters that hangs upon the gates, the one that reads:

Opens at Nightfall
Closes at Dawn
-from the first page of The Night Circus

A dreamer is one who can only find his way by moonlight, and his punishment is that he sees the dawn before the rest of the world.

- Oscar Wilde, 1888

As soon as I read the opening sentence, I thought of Ray Bradbury's "Something Wicked This Way Comes".

Two magical men, who have been alive for who knows how long, have agreed to embark on another contest.  They each choose a child to train.  These two children grow up to be Celia and Marco.  They are to compete against each other in a duel of magic beneath the black and white tents of
Le Cirque des Reves.

Glamourous Hostess Original Paintings!

Hello everyone!  I've been playing around with some mixed media and I came up with these new paintings.  First I was just thinking and doodling these little dresses with aprons.

Now I must admit my studio is quite messy.  There are books strewn around every available surface.  I grabbed a vintage copy of Emily Post's Etiquette book from 1960 that was a gift my dad gave to my mom when they first got married.  I scanned a page out of the "Simple Party-Giving" section, printed it out and painted these retro dresses and aprons on it.  They remind me of my mother and grandmother's era of entertaining, and always looking glamourous even at home.  They would both wear dresses, heels and jewelry everyday!  It was kind of fun to skim through the buffet party section to see what was all the rage to serve up in the 1960's. Apparently you just don't have a party unless there are olives on your table!

This is the Lana dress.

This is the Ginger dress.

And this is the Jeanne dress.

These three paintings are available in my Etsy shop.

Framed Perfume Prints

One of my customers from Brazil sent me this photo of the prints she ordered from me.  Didn't she do a wonderful job of framing them?  Thanks Yasmine for the photo!!  I love to see how people choose to display my prints.

Yasmine ordered the Chloe, YSL, Miss Dior, and Daisy prints for her grouping.
